James P. Ulwick

Mr. Ulwick became a principal of the Firm in 1986.  His practice is wide-ranging, including criminal and civil litigation of all kinds.

During law school, Mr. Ulwick served as an associate editor of the Catholic University Law Review.  Following his clerkship, he spent six years as a federal prosecutor; three years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey (1978-1981), and three years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland (1981-1984). 

During his years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Mr. Ulwick tried numerous cases, including prosecution of labor racketeering, political corruption, and other violations of federal law.  Since joining the Firm, Mr. Ulwick has tried many cases in state and federal courts, including: banking, criminal defense, class actions, contracts, personal injury, legal and medical malpractice, RICO, construction, equal employment, real estate, securities, toxic tort, and other cases.

Mr. Ulwick is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and a permanent member of the Judicial Conference for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.  He has been listed for more than 15 years in the publication, The Best Lawyers in America (three categories: Commercial Litigation, White-Collar Criminal Defense, and Bet-the-Company Litigation).  Chambers USA rated Mr. Ulwick as one of the best commercial litigators in Maryland for 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Chambers lists Mr. Ulwick, with only six other lawyers, in Band 1 of leading individuals in litigation.  Mr. Ulwick is listed in Maryland Super Lawyers 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 as one of the State's top 50 attorneys. Additionally, Mr. Ulwick is listed in The Best of the U.S. 2008 Listings in the area of Commercial Litigation.
