The Firm's summer associates serve an important role in the Firm's representation of its clients. Summer associates do not receive "make-work" projects. Rather, they receive projects relevant to and necessary for advancing the interests of the Firm's clients.
The summer associate program is designed with two goals in mind: (1) to evaluate law students for potential future employment; and (2) to expose the summer associates to challenging and diverse projects from each of the Firm's attorneys.
The nature, duration, and level of complexity of each project depends on multiple factors, including the client's objectives and strategy determinations made during the course of representation. For all projects, the summer associates are required to employ excellent analytical, research, and writing skills.
The Firm encourages the summer associates to accompany attorneys to hearings, depositions, trials, settlement conferences, real estate closings, and other client-related events. In addition, the summer associates are frequently invited to attend various social, bar-related, and community functions. The summer associate program also includes luncheons with local judges, at which the summer associates have the opportunity to interact with and ask questions of members of the bench.
The Firm's attorneys recognize the importance of giving feedback to the summer associates. The most meaningful feedback occurs during the day-to-day interactions with assigning attorneys. Because the Firm regards its summer associates as professionals, the Firm expects and encourages its summer associates to seek individual feedback directly from their assigning attorneys. In addition, the attorneys responsible for coordinating the summer associate program periodically meet with each summer associate to provide evaluations. These evaluations are based upon assessments of strengths and areas needing improvement identified by the attorneys with whom the summer associates have worked.
The Firm participates in on-campus interviewing throughout the region, and participates in several consortium interviews conducted in Washington, D.C. for students from law schools outside of the Baltimore-D.C. area. In addition, the Firm encourages interested law students from all schools to submit their resumes, writing samples, and transcripts directly. Historically, the Firm has hired summer associates from a wide variety of law schools, including Georgetown, Notre Dame, University of Maryland, University of Baltimore, Wake Forest, Northwestern, George Washington, Boston College, William & Mary, and the University of Virginia.
The Firm accepts resumes beginning August 1 for students seeking a summer associate position for the following summer. For further information about the summer associate program, contact one of the coordinating attorneys: Katrina J. Dennis (kdennis@kg-law.com) and Brian S. Southard (bsouthard@kg-law.com). Students interested in clerk positions during the school year should contact one of the coordinating attorneys.
